LSAMP Programs

Northeastern University's LSAMP Program offers several programs aimed at supporting students currently enrolled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs as well as encouraging prospective students to enter this field and ensuring their success.

Mentor/Research Program

LSAMP's Mentor/Research program links faculty mentors with underrepresented students at Northeastern University. This opportunity allows students to initiate and coordinate research projects that further develop their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Undergraduate students who participate in the program are required to conduct research under the supervision of their faculty mentor in addition to taking regular academic classes. By testing what is learned in the classroom examining scientific theories in the laboratory, they gain a deeper understanding of real world applications.

During the summer, students conduct original research during an 8-10 week intensive program. Additionally, students meet as a group for a seminar series led by active research scientists. The seminars enable students to learn how to do independent work and to gain experience in technical ideas orally and in writing. Other sessions include tutorials on the graduate student application process and colloquium talks in which graduate students share their experiences and provide mentoring.

Early exposure to research projects encourage students to form and sustain an academic connection to their STEM discipline. The research opportunities introduce the challenge of advanced academic work, thus promoting graduate study and exposing them to scholarly research and independent learning. Hands-on experience allows them to sharpen problem solving skills as well as make personal connections that enhance their potential for future lab positions.

To Apply

We are looking for African-American, Latino, or Native American students. Faculty must submit a proposal and students must submit an application with most current transcript.

You may download the application form for Northeastern LSAMP (.pdf) and submit it to Mal Hill, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, in 112 Hayden.

Intro to Research Program

This is a program that prepares freshman students for research. They will be introduced to research methods and meet monthly for workshops and seminars that will help them acclimate to college life. The program is designed to help students transition from high school to college and develop learning behaviors that help students succeed at Northeastern in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Students receive a book stipend for each semester of participation. Participants will get book stipends, work with LSAMP mentors and will be able to apply for summer research opportunities.
